'Must Have' Kit
Footwear
This can be either walking boots or trail shoes (a type of trainer that is designed for rough ground). Boots can be leather or synthetic material and need to have a good tread (vibram is good). Fit and comfort is very important. Trail shoes are great if you want a lighter option, but you must be confident that your ankles don’t need the support that a boot gives. Bear in mind that we will be in walking on rough ground that could well be wet / boggy.
Waterproofs
A top and over-trousers that are waterproof is vital. ‘Showerproof’ and ‘Barbour’ type jackets are not adequate. The jacket needs to have a hood.
Rucksack
This will need to be large enough to carry your waterproofs, a spare top, food and drink, plus anything else like a sit mat that you may want to bring.
There are lots of very cheap rucksacks on the market, but you will be more comfortable with a model that has a padded back and waist strap.
No rucksack is waterproof, so bring a bin liner too.
Hat and gloves
It may be hot sun, in which case you may want a scarf or cap - or it may be wet and windy, in which case a fleece or wool hat is needed. Bring gloves too.
Drinks
There is plenty of water on the fells, which you can drink if you want to. Alternatively, bring a water bottle. You may want to pack a flask for a hot drink if the weather is wet.
Swimming shoes
There will be an opportunity to get into the tarns and rivers to swim / dip. You must have something to protect your feet from sharp stones that is also light to carry. Or you can wear your boots / trail shoes.
