While we certainly do not want to exclude anybody from Spirit Quest, it is important to ensure that you come on the course that is appropriate for you. A certain level of physical fitness is important, not just for your enjoyment, comfort and safety, but also for the safety and enjoyment of the other members of Spirit Quest.
This course is for people who:-
- can manage day-long walks (with breaks along the way for joint work and meditation)
- take regular, active exercise
- feel confident walking on rough and rocky ground
Depending on the weather, about 50% of the course time will be spent on the fells, in places that are accessible only by foot. And whilst the course isn't about travelling great distances or reaching the highest summits, you will need to have a reasonable level of fitness and agility.
The longest and highest route about six miles with a climb and descent of 500m, which is comparable to a walk of about 12 miles in a non-mountainous area.
You will need to consider:-
- what distance you can walk and how much ascent and descent you can comfortably manage
- how good your joints are
- how good your balance is on rocky paths
- whether you can maintain a steady pace
- whether you can walk for four days in succession (although only for half a day on one of the days)
If the answer to any of these question leads you to feel that the Spirit Quest is perhaps more than you can manage, then let us know what you can do and we'll look at creating a different programme in the future.
